Ashen Grey : Victorian Age World of Darkness

Unleash the Fury

On this page you’ll find answers to the most commonly asked questions during werewolf character creation, as well as a few handy guidelines for using the special rules and systems found in Werewolf: The Forsaken when playing the game on an online chat.

Character Creation

The basic character creation rules are presented in the World of Darkness Rulebook and Werewolf: The Forsaken. Be sure to read the Character Creation section of the General FAQ before going through the guidelines below.

• Do I need be a member of a tribe at character creation?

No. Obviously we’d prefer it if you were in a tribe at the beginning of the chronicle, but you can elect to be one of the Ghost Wolves. Remember that being a Ghost Wolf is a deliberate choice to eschew ancestral spirits and history for the ideal of individualism, making your character a rebel, outcast or iconoclast that freely (and often intentionally) defies the organization of the establish society. Being a Ghost Wolf isn’t about being undecided on a choice of tribe, it’s about not wishing to be a part of that system.

• Are there any restrictions on the tribes I can pick from?

Yes. Right now, you can’t join a Pure Tribe or the Bale Hounds. This may change as the chronicle progresses.

• Do I need a pack at character creation?

No. Obviously we’d prefer it if you were in a pack at the beginning of the chronicle, but we realize that it is sometimes difficult to organise a pack without first seeing how the players play. You may develop a pack later on in the chronicle.

• Can I play a lodge member at character creation?

No (see p.199, Werewolf: The Forsaken for details). Lodge membership doesn’t mean much if it’s too easily attained. Applications, trials, and initiations are all good plots, and the Storytellers reserve the right to tell them in game.

• Can I create my own lodge?

No. There are rule systems for creating a lodge presented in Werewolf: The Forsaken. If you don’t like the choices that are available, you’ll have to wait for future supplements.

• Are there any restrictions on Merits?

No.

• Can I create my own totem?

Yes. In fact, this is encouraged. Any totem you create will serve the desires and interests of your character’s pack, and needs to be approved by a Storyteller.

• Can I create my own fetish?

Yes. When you learn the Fetish Rite (see p.162, Werewolf: The Forsaken), and wish to design your own items, we’ll look at it then.

• Are there any restrictions on Rituals?

No.

• Is there any restriction on Primal Urge?

No. If you really want to blow six Merit points to get Primal Urge 3, go for it.

• Can I drop dots in Harmony to gain experience points?

No. This is an optional rule that we’re not supporting. All new werewolf characters start the chronicle at Harmony 7 and are assumed to have undergone the First Change recently (i.e. within the last few months, just long enough to know the basics at most).

Special Rules and Systems

• How is Essence handled?

We’re using the honour system for this. When your character is sanctioned you are assumed to be on full Essence. Thereafter, you should keep track of how much Essence your character has. Without a locus or the ability to hunt spirits, Essence gains are dictated by moon phase. Rahu and Irraka regain 5 Essence every lunar cycle, starting two days before their auspice moon. Cahalith, Elodoth and Ithaeur regain 3 Essence in both the waxing and waning phases of their auspice moon, for a total of 6 Essence every lunar cycle.

• How are you handling claims for territory and locus?

If you desire territory or a locus for your pack (which you should), you may email a Storyteller to set up a scene.

• How is Renown handled?

Exactly as described in Werewolf: The Forsaken, for the most part. Renown for territory and individuals will be recognized as described on p.198 of Werewolf: The Forsaken. Renown will only increase when the Storyteller is convinced that the applying player’s character has consistently performed above normal expectation, and has commited a feat worthy of an increase. All Renown increases will cost experience points.

• How are you handling the increase of Primal Urge?

Exactly as described in Werewolf: The Forsaken, for the most part. While you can increase Primal Urge with experience points, you can only do so once per Season and, like any experience request, the Storyteller has the right to refuse the increase if he feels it is unjustified. If you start the chronicle with more than Primal Urge 1, you will need to explain how you gained the extra dots to the sanctioning Storyteller.
